How Do You Do it?

People confront me all the time, and they ask me how it is that I do what I do? How is it that I find the time to do everything on my agenda? Well I guess first I should break it all down. So, I am currently taking two online classes, I work a full-time job, I volunteer everywhere, I go to the gym, I am the vice president of a base private organization, I am a committee lead for another private organization, I travel, and I have a social life. Truthfully, I haven’t really thought of the perfect answer. I normally just answer with “I just do.” Maybe it’s time to actually figure it out.

For starters, I am extremely goal driven. There’s something crazy about accomplishing something. It gives me a high that can last for weeks. To me, that’s all I need. I see something I want, I set my course, I achieve it, and I feel satisfied.

Next would be my complete lack of sleep. On average I sleep about three to four hours every night. I’ve been that way for a while, and for me it just works. So, when it comes to my actual energy level… I have no freaking idea where that comes from, because everyone else says they would be exhausted if they were me. Don’t get me wrong, there are days when I can feel that my body is completely drained, and I do take the time to recover, but it isn’t with sleep. That’s because, well… I don’t sleep. I just said that. I do however, sleep better when there is someone else in my house. It doesn’t matter if they are in my bed, the guest room, or on the couch. Just having another person in the house makes everything seem more stable, and for some reason lets me get a full night’s sleep. Odd? Trust me I know.

I have a freaking planner. Yes, I know, its nerdy, and whatever else you want to call it, but it works for me. If I were to lose my planner, it would be like flushing my life down the toilet. I have everything in there. All my appointments, meetings, briefings, assignment due dates, like I said, everything. There’s highlighted notes, stapled in pages, sticky notes, and everything else under the sun. yet, its organized, and it serves its purpose very well. I have no idea where I would be without it.

Between setting goals, not sleeping, and writing everything down in my planner, the ultimate key is prioritizing. I understand what is more important, and I know when to stop and make sure everything is on track. I am able to do what I do, for as long as I do, without losing track simply by prioritizing my tasks. It’s the easiest, yet it is one of the hardest to do, and that’s because at times everything can seem to be just as important as the next thing. When that happens, I take a step back, just for a brief second, and I reevaluate. Then I jump right back in and I’m good to go.

When it comes to my social life… I have one, but it is almost completely no existent. I have a few friends, some better than others, that will go out and have a good time with me included. It doesn’t happen very often. I really just find breaks in my schedule and push somewhat of a social life into those breaks. Out of everything that I am able to do with my time, finding time for others is probably one of the hardest. That’s because you’re not just working with your schedule, but you’re also working with theirs. That and sometimes people just suck, and there is no helping that one.

So, there you have it. that’s how I do what I do. I don’t know if you were expecting some long drawn out process, or some crazy hidden secret. Well, I hate to break it to you, but I’m just like any other busy person. Except the fact that I am me and they are them. Just find the important things, and put them first.
